Resources for CSD students from CUNY and other agencies

The following is a list of available resources for students with disabilities from both within CUNY and from outside agencies:

  • ACCES-VR - ACCES-VR is a New York State program that provides counseling, vocational guidance, training and placement assistance to eligible individuals with disabilities.
  • New York State Commission for the Blind - The Commission for the Blind provides counseling, vocational guidance, training and placement assistant to eligible individuals who are blind and legally blind.
  • Disability Rights New York Client Assistance Program - DRNY provides information on the legal rights, services, and benefits for persons with disabilities. DRNY can also assist applicants for programs such as ACCES-VR.
  • Social Security Administration - The Social Security Administration can provide assistance for qualifying individuals with disabilities who are unable to work. Through the SSA, you can apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), as well as other supplemental assistance programs like WIC/Food Stamps. The SSA accepts applications online, over the phone, or through mail.
  • Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities - The MOPD provides information of services, agencies, and resources for persons with disabilities in New York City.
  • Information on applying for NYC parking permits for persons with disabilities.
  • Access-A-Ride - Access-A-Ride is an MTA-run program that provides transportation for people with disabilities who cannot use bus or subway service for their commute.
  • Independence Care System of New York - ICSNY is a non-profit agency that supports senior adults and adults with physical and chronic conditions in Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and the Bronx to live at home and participate in community life.
  • National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) - NAMI is a grassroots organization that provides advocacy, education, and public awareness on mental illness and how those affected by mental illness can lead happy, fulfilling lives.
  • UDL² Psycho-Educational Evaluation Site List - This list contains locations of sites where students can get a psycho-educational evaluation that can later be submitted to the CSD as documentation for receiving accommodations. All sites are in the New York metropolitan area.
  • CUNY Distance Learning Toolkit - The CUNY Distance Learning Toolkit was created under the leadership of the  CUNY Coalition for Students with Disabilities (CCSD) in collaboration with the CUNY LD Project and the CUNY Office of Student Inclusion Initiatives. Developed during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, this digital guide provides resources for students on how to manage distance learning and a fully or partially online course schedule. The toolkit provides study tips, guides on how to practice mindfulness and healthy habits, and tools that help students communicate effectively with their professors and support staff in a fully digital learning environment.
