Satisfactory Academic Progress Guidelines

Below are the TAP & PELL guidelines students must adhere to in order to meet Satisfactory Academic Progress each semester.

Guidelines

General Information

• In some cases, a student’s failure to be in compliance with SAP is due to unforeseen events beyond the student’s control. If such extenuating circumstances can be documented for the specific semester(s) when the deficiencies occurred, the student may initiate the SAP appeal process.
• Completion of this process does not guarantee an approval and the reinstatement of Financial Aid eligibility.
• Students are responsible for payment of tuition regardless of their financial aid status.
• It is also the student's responsibility to be aware of all York College registration and payment deadlines.
• In order to be reconsidered for full Financial Aid eligibility after failing to meet SAP, a student must submit an appeal. The mere passage of time will not be sufficient enough for a student to regain Financial Aid eligibility
• At York College, the SAP Committee will meet at regularly scheduled times to consider SAP appeals.

Satisfactory Academic Progress For Federal Financial Aid (PELL)

There are three general reasons as to why students fail Satisfactory Academic Progress and can lose their Federal Financial Aid:

• Qualitative Standard: Cumulative GPA
• Quantitative Standard: Pace of Progression
• Maximum Time Frame

Qualitative Standard: Cumulative GPA

The minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) required based on total credits attempted. (Undergraduate and graduate students have different standards.)

Quantitative Standard: Pace of Progression

Measure of pace of progress. Students are required to complete a percentage of the total credits they attempt. (Undergraduate and graduate quantitative standards are different.)

Graduate students must earn two-thirds of the credit hours that they attempt.

Maximum Time Frame

Students may not attempt more than 150 percent of the credits required for the degree they are seeking.

Satisfactory Academic Progress for New York State Financial Aid (TAP)

• Students are allowed a total of 48 TAP points for their entire undergraduate degree.
• Students use 6 points for every full-time TAP payment.
• Students can earn up to 10 semesters and 60 allowed a total of 60 points.
• Students must be enrolled full-time, that is, enrolled for at least 12 credits or equated credits that meet the requirements of their curriculum/major.
• In a students first TAP semester, they must be taking at least 3 degree credits as part of their full-time course load.
• Students must take a minimum of 6 degree credits every semester after their first TAP payment.
• If a student repeats a course that they previously passed, they may not count the repeated course towards full-time enrollment for TAP purposes.
• If a student repeats a course that they previously failed, they may include that course towards full-time enrollment for TAP purposes.
• Remedial courses may be counted toward either full-time or part-time enrollment for TAP purposes. However, to qualify for TAP, students must always be registered for a certain number of degree credit courses.
• To receive TAP payments students must make academic progress towards a degree.
• Maintain a minimum GPA as specified in the chart below for each payment requested.
